The leading actor in a theatre company on tour in Spain dies in a car crash. A new actor, Jorge Ruiz, comes to take over. He is good-looking, young and revolutionary.
His arrival gives rise to tensions, jealousy and distrust among the rest of the company and especially so for Mario Soto who is in charge of directing while the stage manager, who is busy working on an opera for the Teatro Real in Madrid, is away. In the first rehearsal of the play they are doing, “The Untitled Comedy” by Federico García Lorca, there is a clash between these two men. This struggle between the two is witnessed by Carmen Morante, the leading actress in the company and Laura G. Reyna who was the secret lover of the late leading actor. If this wasn’t enough the newcomer brings further conflict; he reads a manifesto in favour of peace at the end of the performance. Mario questions this decision and the company is split.
