Alberto, a young Portuguese man with monarchist ideas, is in exile in Belém do Pará in 1912. There he is employed by Velasco, a Spanish foreman, to work in Juca Tristao, a rubber plantation in the heart of the Amazon.
After a long journey down the River Amazon under subhuman conditions he arrives at the Paraiso rubber plantation where he is put to work collecting rubber in the middle of the jungle under the protection of the Firmino. Alberto discovers a world which is strange and wild for him, in which the Indians, fever and the madness of men are everyday dangers. But he also finds friendship, loyalty and the solidarity of the rubber plantation workers against the despotic power of their exploiters.
Alberto es un joven portugués de ideas monárquicas, que en 1912 se encuentra exiliado en Belém do Pará. Allí es contratado por Velasco, un capataz español, para trabajar en el cauchal de Juca Tristao en pleno corazón de la Amazonia.
Después de un largo viaje por el río Amazonas, en condiciones infrahumanas, llega al cauchal Paraíso donde es puesto a trabajar en la recolección del caucho, en mitad de la selva, bajo la protección del cearense Firmino. Alberto descubre allí un mundo que le es extraño y salvaje, en el que los indios, la fiebre y la locura de los hombre son peligros cotidianos. Pero también descubre la amistad, la lealtad y la solidaridad de los caucheros frente al poder despótico de sus exploradores.
